Ash Wednesday Service - ALL WELCOME
The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday: it follows on from Shrove Tuesday, also known as ‘Mardi Gras’ (which means ‘Fat Tuesday’). It is a time (traditionally) of fasting, penitence and reflection.
Those who attend receive a mark of ashes in the form of the cross on their foreheads. The placing of the ashes is accompanied by one of two sentences: ‘Repent, and believe in the Gospel’ and ‘Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return’. The standard practice for the ashes to be prepared by burning the palm leaves from the preceding year’s Palm Sunday service.
